Why do Chihuahuas like to burrow under blankets?

Do you have a Chihuahua? If so, you may have noticed that they love to burrow under blankets. Why do Chihuahuas like to do this? Let’s find out! In this blog post, we will take a look at the possible reasons why Chihuahuas enjoy burying themselves under blankets. So, if you’re curious about why your Chihuahua likes to hide under the covers, keep reading!

Why do Chihuahuas burrow under blankets?

One possible reason why Chihuahuas like to burrow under blankets is that it makes them feel safe and secure. By hiding under a blanket, your Chihuahua feels like they are in a den, making them feel comfortable and protected.

But why blankets? Well, blankets are usually an easy target around the home, on the sofa, on your bed, in the washing pile. Blankets are everywhere, so they are often an easy place for your Chihuahua to target.

Dogs are denning animals, and they will often find a place to sleep in or under anything. If your Chihuahua is burrowing under blankets, it’s possibly because the blanket provides them with privacy and comfort, similar to what they would get in a den.

So, now you know a little bit more about why Chihuahuas like to burrow under blankets. If your pup is always trying to get underneath the covers, it’s likely because they feel safe and comfortable in that environment.

What else do Chihuahuas like to burrow under?

Well, I have three chihuahuas, and two of them will burrow or hide under most things around the home; the other only really goes for blankets. Here are some places where I have found my chi burrowing or hiding.

  • Piles of laundry
  • Behind cushions on the sofa
  • Under blankets
  • Under coats
  • Under the sofa
  • Under a rug
  • Behind curtains
  • Under their own bedding

So as you can see, they are not limited to just blankets, and that’s is not all the places I have found my chi’s! They will try if they think they can get in it or under it.

Chihuahuas burrowing to stay warm

Additionally, many Chihuahuas enjoy the warmth that blankets provide. So, if your Chihuahua is cold, they may bury themselves under a blanket in an attempt to warm up.

This is a natural behavior for the breed, and there’s not much you can do to change it.

Just be sure to keep an eye on your pup while they are snuggled up under a blanket, in case they get too hot!

Chihuahuas burrowing due to anxiety

Also, Chihuahuas may burrow under blankets because they are feeling anxious due to loud noise or other disturbances in their environment. By hiding under a blanket, your Chihuahua can feel more relaxed and comfortable by being away from the source of anxiety.

This could be true if your Chihuahua is a rescue, or maybe they have been re-homed and are not used to their surroundings, so this is just something to consider.

Another cause of anxiety can be bonfire night, and my dogs hate it. They bark almost non-stop and tend to hide quite a lot.

Is your Chihuahua pregnant? this can be a cause of burrowing or nesting

A pregnant chihuahua or any dog will often try to make a nest to deliver their puppies. The nest will usually be in a quiet area, and they may even drag items to the nest area, such as blankets or other soft items.

My female Chihuahua made her nest behind a curtain when she was pregnant, and she shredded up a whole box of tissues. It was pretty fun to watch her doing it back and forth, collecting the tissues, then shredding them and moving them into place with her nose.

I did end up moving her from the location as it was not practical for me to care for the puppies there.

This same behavior can also happen if your chi has a phantom pregnancy.

Can you stop your Chihuahua burrowing?

It is a natural instinct, so you will likely have a hard time breaking that, but if the burrowing is a problem, try to remove the items they are using to burrow into, such as blankets from sofas, etc.

Other than that, you can always try to check them when they start doing it; if your dog understands the “NO” command, you may have some luck.

For me, I don’t see burrowing as a problem, so I let my dogs get on with it!

conclusion

So, now you know a little bit more about why Chihuahuas like to burrow under blankets. If your pup is always trying to get underneath the covers, it’s likely because they feel safe and comfortable in that environment.

Additionally, many Chihuahuas enjoy the warmth that blankets provide. So, if your Chihuahua is cold, they may bury themselves under a blanket in an attempt to warm up.

However, Chihuahuas may also burrow under blankets because they are feeling anxious due to loud noise or other disturbances in their environment. Your Chihuahua can feel more relaxed and comfortable by hiding under a blanket.
